A Practice Rooted in Culture & Memory

My Sista-in Law Fine Arts was founded on a singular belief: that Black contemporary art belongs not only in conversation — but in permanent, visible spaces.

Mark Richardson’s work draws from cultural memory, lived experience, and a deep commitment to honoring the dignity, beauty, and complexity of Black life. Each painting becomes a bridge — connecting past and present, artist and subject, and ultimately, the viewer to something deeply human.

These works are not created for decoration alone.
They are created to be felt, collected, and lived with.

The Creative Process

Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Mark incorporates layered color, mixed media, and hand embellishment to create works with both visual and physical depth.

No two pieces are identical. Each carries its own presence.

The process begins with research and reflection — studying cultural references, historical narratives, and emotional intention. From there, compositions develop through sketch and layered paint, built slowly and deliberately. Final hand embellishments introduce texture and dimension, giving each work a distinct, tactile quality.

This is why experiencing the work in person reveals what images cannot.

Themes & Presence

Recurring throughout the work are themes of identity, dignity, joy, and remembrance.

Figures are rendered with intention — their posture, gaze, and adornment all carrying meaning. Color is used not just for composition, but as a language rooted in African and African-American visual traditions.

The work poses a quiet but powerful question:
