About the Work

Inspired by Mark Richardson’s granddaughter, My Edges is a vibrant celebration of Black girlhood, beauty, individuality, and the meaningful connections shared across generations.

A gathering of expressive women and girls fills the composition, each distinguished by her own hairstyle, clothing, color, and presence. Braids, curls, sculpted coils, sweeping waves, and boldly styled edges become expressions of identity—personal details that communicate creativity, confidence, and pride.

Behind the figures, a row of red brick homes places the scene within the warmth and familiarity of the neighborhood. The women stand closely together, suggesting family, friendship, protection, and the collective influence of those who help a young girl recognize the beauty within herself.

 Richardson’s vivid palette and strong black outlines give the composition the appearance of stained glass. A luminous high-gloss finish intensifies this effect, allowing the surface to capture and reflect light while revealing additional texture and depth as the artwork is viewed from different angles.

Both playful and deeply affirming, My Edges honors the rituals, conversations, and loving hands through which beauty traditions are passed from one generation to the next.
